Expressing gratitude might seem like a small action, but the effect is huge. According to author James Clear, 'thank you is the most under-appreciated and under-used phrase on the planet.' Clear, author of Atomic Habits, says there are times when 'thank you' should be said.
The first opportunity to say 'thank you' is after a compliment. Some people brush off compliments or minimize them, but Clear says they should be enjoyed and simply accepted. A less obvious time to say 'thank you' is when running late. instead of making excuses, the situation can be made better by thanking the person. After all, this individual had the patience to wait. Another time to thank someone is after being confided in. A simply 'thank you for sharing' can go a long way.
Saying 'thank you' when getting helpful feedback might be easy, but Clear states it's also called for when receiving unfair criticism and unsolicited advice. He argues when you thank someone for criticizing, it neutralizes the power of their statements.
Last but not least, say 'thank you' if there is any doubt. It does not have to be fancy or long. Taking the time to thank someone can make all the difference.
