Standing at 8'2' tall, Big Bird is a compassionate 61/2-year-old yellow bird on the TV series Sesame Street. He enjoys helping others in his community, including his best friend Snuffy. Reflective, thoughtful, and sensitive to the feelings of others, he displays a childlike innocence and great empathy for everyone on Sesame Street.
When Big Bird asks questions about things he does not understand, he makes children feel comfortable asking questions, too. His inquisitive nature helps those around him to learn everything from numbers and letters to life lessons.
One of the hardest lessons Big Bird has helped children understand is the passing of a loved one. On Thanksgiving Day 1983, children all over the country watched as Big Bird learned the death of his beloved friend, Mr. Hooper. He asked questions of his adult friends, experiencing confusion, anger, and grief when he finally realized his friend was gone forever.
Big Bird understands what it means to be a good friend. His favorite activities include dancing, reading, and collecting various things. This 'first grader' also enjoys roller-blading and watching sports. He is proud of his neighborhood, and he especially loves being tall. It helps him see the world from a different point of view!
